The Wheatsheaf

Having been living back in Perth now for two and half years, Jamie Oehlers returns with his new quartet made up of Perth’s finest young musicians. The past two years have been busy for Jamie. On top of becoming the Coordinator of Jazz Studies at the prestigious Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Jamie has toured Australia and Thailand with the Ari Hoenig Quartet, performed in New York and around Australia with George Garzone, performed with Charlie Haden, Eric Harland and Reuben Rogers as part of the Melbourne Jazz Festival, has recorded two new albums of standards with Paul Grabowsky and has maintained his own festival and club appearances with the Jamie Oehlers Quartet, Lost and Found, the Paul Grabowsky Sextet and Blowfish. Coming from Perth with Jamie will be Tal Cohen on piano, Nick Abbey on bass and Sean Phillips on drums. Jamie describes these young players as some of the best young talent he has ever come across. “Playing with these really creative and energetic young musicians has been an inspiration for me. When we first played together I knew something special would come of this union. As we played, rehearsed, hung out and discussed music, we developed an understanding of the direction this group would take, as well as a deeper understanding of each other’s unique influences and how they would integrate. This tour represents the result of that understanding.” Jamie’s music is always energetic, creative and honest. Be one of the first to hear this new quartet and some of Australia’s finest new talent with one of Australia’s most awarded jazz artists.

Aunty Richard (SYD)

6 April, 2009, 8pm
The Wheatsheaf Hotel, 39 George St. Thebarton

Aunty Richard brings together jazz, rock and electronic elements with a focus on composition and melody. The players are vibrant and assured, creating an edgy and engaging momentum. The tenor flutters, growls, blares and rasps; it shrieks in horror, bounces happily and cries with anguish. Hooks are shared between bass and sax and the drums solo explosively. “…big bulldozing riffs that threaten to flatten you as you listen.” (Sydney Morning Herald) “…the boys really do know what they’re doing.” (Music Feeds)

* Two Sets *

Featuring:
Jamie Oehlers – saxophone

'Lost and Found' is a collaboration between three of Australia's finest improvisers, multi-award winning saxophonist Jamie Oehlers, acclaimed pianist Paul Grabowsky and the supremely talented drummer, Dave Beck. This bass-less trio embodies the spirit of the great explorers by performing in a purely improvised setting and creating an exciting adventure through a myriad of shifting harmonic, melodic and rhythmic contours. Oehlers, Grabowsky and Beck take you on an improvised journey through time and space, reassembling musical atoms, as they move to create a new melodic universe.

"This music eschews any repetition. It explores every corner and combination of the three voices. Just total improvisation, bound up in the moment." The Age

"The trio's integration is extraordinary, approaching a state of shared neurons." The Australian

"This music grabs you and hangs on." The Herald Sun
